What AC Replacement Costs in Florida

AC replacement in Florida is priced by system tonnage, efficiency rating, and how much of the existing ductwork, electrical and air handler platform has to change. The equipment is rarely the biggest variable.

How much does it cost to replace an air conditioner in Florida?

Price is driven by system tonnage, the efficiency rating you choose, and how much of the existing ductwork, electrical and air handler platform has to change. The equipment itself is often the smaller half of the number.

Two quotes on the same house can differ by thousands and both be honest, because one is replacing the box and the other is fixing the reason the old box died. Undersized returns, leaking duct, and a rusted platform will kill a new system the same way they killed the last one.

The tonnage question matters more here than almost anywhere. Florida is a latent-heat climate, meaning the system spends much of its work removing humidity rather than lowering temperature. An oversized unit cools the air fast, shuts off, and never runs long enough to dry the house, which is why an oversized house can be cold and clammy at the same time.

01

What actually moves the price

  • Tonnage

Sized by a load calculation on the house, not by the size of the old unit. The old unit may have been wrong, and matching it just repeats the mistake.

  • Efficiency rating

Higher SEER2 equipment costs more up front and uses less power for the same cooling. Where the sensible line falls depends on how many hours a year the system runs and what you pay per kilowatt hour.

  • Single stage or variable speed

A variable speed system runs longer at lower output, which is what actually controls humidity in Florida. It costs more and it is the upgrade most likely to change how the house feels.

  • Ductwork

Leaking, crushed or undersized duct wastes the capacity you are buying. Duct sealing or partial replacement is frequently the difference between two quotes.

  • Air handler location

An attic air handler in August is a different job from a garage or closet unit. Platform, secondary drain pan, float switch and access all factor in.

  • Electrical and line set

Breaker size, disconnect, whip and the refrigerant line set may all need to change with the new equipment, particularly on an older changeout.

02

The line items to look for on a proposal

  • Manufacturer, model number and matched indoor and outdoor units
  • Rated tonnage and the load calculation it came from
  • SEER2 rating of the matched system, not the outdoor unit alone
  • What happens to the existing ductwork, in specifics
  • New thermostat, float switch and secondary drain pan
  • Permit and inspection fees included or excluded
  • Refrigerant line set replaced or flushed and reused
  • Manufacturer parts warranty, labor warranty, and who honors each

A matched system means the indoor and outdoor units are rated to work together. Putting a new outdoor unit on an old air handler often means the pair never reaches the efficiency printed on the box.

03

Where solar changes the math

Air conditioning is the largest single electrical load in most Florida homes, and it peaks in the afternoon, which is when a solar array is producing the most. That overlap is the reason the two decisions are usually made together here.

The order that makes sense is efficiency first. Sizing an array around a failing, oversized, leaking system means paying to generate power that the house is wasting. Fix the load, then size the generation to what the house actually uses.

Installations are performed by independent Florida licensed contractor(s). Nova Structa does not perform installation work.

Questions we get on this

How much does it cost to replace an air conditioner in Florida?
The number is driven by tonnage, efficiency rating, and how much of the existing ductwork, electrical and air handler platform has to change. Equipment is often the smaller half of the total. A load calculation and a written proposal are the only way to get a real figure.
Should I replace just the outdoor unit?
Usually not. The indoor and outdoor units are rated as a matched pair, and mixing a new condenser with an old air handler commonly means you never get the efficiency you paid for, and can complicate the warranty.
What size air conditioner do I need?
It comes from a load calculation on your house, accounting for square footage, insulation, window area and orientation, not from the size of the unit being replaced. In Florida an oversized system short cycles and leaves the house humid.
Is a higher SEER2 rating worth it in Florida?
Florida runs air conditioning far more hours a year than most of the country, so efficiency has more hours to pay back here than it would elsewhere. Where the sensible stopping point is depends on your usage and your electric rate, which is a conversation worth having with actual numbers.
Why is my new AC not fixing the humidity?
Most often because it is oversized, or because the ductwork is pulling humid air in from the attic. A system that cools quickly and shuts off never runs long enough to dry the air. Runtime, not raw capacity, is what removes humidity.
Do I need a permit to replace an AC in Florida?
Yes. Equipment changeouts are permitted and inspected work in Florida. A quote that is cheaper because it skips the permit is not actually cheaper.

Cost information on this page is general Florida market context, not a quote and not Nova Structa pricing. Your price depends on your home, the load calculation, equipment selection and site conditions, and is set out in a written proposal.
